I really have to wonder what the feeling was in 1942 that forced the Czech Government in Exile to insist on the elimination of this horrid man, when they surely knew that the Germans would be out for retribution. The world is not a safe place when such evil flourishes, and is installed at the top of the political chain of a nation. Thank you so much for putting together so much information and images, that a person can feel almost as if they visited the place where so momentous an event in WWII happened, contesting the will and power of German National Socialism. It is a lesson for us all to be aware of in today's world, wherever we see and live with tyranny, to remember that tyrants cannot be allowed to flourish.potatopancakeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02886891436887145326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-37707978494377872922016-12-22T16:43:55.414-05:002016-12-22T16:43:55.414-05:00Impressions beat out facts, every time.Impressions beat out facts, every time.Andy Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14914424782953487352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-16015198817438748992015-11-05T22:10:24.256-05:002015-11-05T22:10:24.256-05:00I was given a 78 recording when I was twelve of a ...I was given a 78 recording when I was twelve of a reading of The Murder of Lidice. I go back and forth over some of the details, and I know that some other historians have in the meantime come to regard it more critically, but it raises crucial issues in an accessible way and is for that reason well suited to teaching.Jim Waldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03742319601988946767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-14225941591169104032015-08-25T08:31:40.147-04:002015-08-25T08:31:40.147-04:00Well I did use a question mark with my title "...Well I did use a question mark with my title "Trouble at the top?"; and notice I went out of my way to find a photo where both the Town Manager and SB Chair Alisa Brewer seem to be sharing a lighthearted moment.

A fighter pilot is trained to scan the horizon and ignore everything that should be there making it easier to spot a tiny dot -- enemy fighter or incoming missile -- that should NOT be there.

When LBJ won the NH primary in 1968 by 49% to 42% over Eugene McCarthy, the headlines could have stated: "LBJ wins by decent margin" or "Is LBJ in trouble?". I of course would have used the latter.

After the tumultuous years for the Select Board during the reign of Anne Awad and Gerry Weiss the institution has become, for lack of a better word, boring (other than the 9/11 commemorative flag fiasco of course). So any hint of discord or friction is made even more newsworthy.

If UMass or Amherst College were to suddenly address grade inflation with new stricter criteria it would shock the first transitional generation of students to come under the new evaluation methods.

Perhaps now that average citizens and town employees know the Select Board takes its job of evaluating the Town Manager so seriously, and that he is not above criticism, the number of people submitting evaluations will increase next year.Larry Kelleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02614645831526190536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-11587516723433615132015-08-20T10:23:14.638-04:002015-08-20T10:23:14.638-04:00Good post as always, Jim. Every spring when my history class gets up to the 1940's I teach a class on the theme of WWII as a Race War, and that image from Life is one of the ones that I show the students. I read Dower's book at Hampshire (I think it was in a class taught by Penina Glazer and Miriam Slater, but I can't remember now) and it made a big impact on me.

I hope you have a great school year!Ethan Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15438537827841858283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-69319420172685343612015-07-17T19:25:04.474-04:002015-07-17T19:25:04.474-04:00Sorry for delay in responding to Rebecca's que...Sorry for delay in responding to Rebecca's question. Yes, the issue of the men's backgrounds is interesting. To be clear: both were soldiers at the start of World War II, who, along with others, volunteered for special training, and then were handpicked for the job. Both Kubiš and Gabčík served in the military for some time until being demobilized in the wake of Munich. When war broke out they joined Czechoslovak forces in Poland, and then, via the French Foreign Legion, ended up in combat in France. Callum MacDonald's history of the assassination describes Gabčík as a locksmith; likewise the memoirs of Col. Moravec (some other sources say he was trained as a blacksmith, though these are not incompatible). MacDonald describes Kubiš only as of peasant background from Moravia, though I recalled other sources (which I don't have handy at the moment speaking of work in a brickyard (see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Kubi%C5%A1).Jim Waldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03742319601988946767noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098499919072806665.post-63067755481670464252015-02-28T12:20:10.436-05:002015-02-28T12:20:10.436-05:00Really--that late? My suggestion would be Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a National Historic Landmark, a small and unassuming upholstery shop that became a legendary recording studio of worldwide renown. It represents the democratizing spirit inherent in the architectural legacy of American popular music.Sheryl A.
